Billy Currington's "Little Bit of Everything" Review

Billy Currington seems to be really getting the hang of all of this these days.

With his third CD release, “Little Bit of Everything” he seems to have really hit his stride, and released a country album that’s got just about everything that you need to be a GREAT album (or CD these days).

Apparently he wasn’t lying when he titled this album because it does run the spectrum.  With an opening cut of “Swimming in Sunshine” he breaks out into a full force summer country song to the likes of Kenny Chesney, yet with that original smooth sound that Billy’s seemed to gotten down pat.

He carries on into “Life, Love, and the Meaning Of”…his sweet philosophical groove where he contemplates everything after a life of struggle after a long day that just don’t seem to be going his way.

One of the best songs on the CD, if not one of the best songs of Billy’s career is “Every Reason Not to Go”, which is a fun and twangy plead to keep a love interest from leaving town.

“Don’t” became the first in the running of what will probably be a string of singles off of this album, and rightly so.  With a R&B groove and a great guitar wah intro that runs nicely through the song, Billy talks about new love, and that painful moment of realizing that you’ve got tear yourselves apart from each other the next morning.

Following that is a great classic type of country song called “People Are Crazy”.  This is a tale of a two guys in a bar, one young…getting some good old wisdom from that lonely old guy you’ve seen so many times at the end of the bar, who keeps to himself, but has tons to say.

There’s a surprise ironic ending that only a guy named Billy Braddock…the guy who wrote George Straight’s killer country hit “He Stopped Loving Her Today” (thought by many to be the perfect country song) could come up with so brilliantly.

Billy shows off his soulful voice in the witty “Everything” where he drools over his woman.

“Walk On” is a song most every guy can relate to, where you see that woman on the street that you’d love to stop and chat with (all day…and then some)…but just keep going anyways without saying a word.  The melody on this song hits all the sweet spots, coming home to the comfy little chords that make a song stick.

If you’re looking for a great love song then hop on over to track 11, where “Nobody Has Eyes Like You” could very well lend a guy some good lines to get in good with his own woman.

Of course every good country CD has to have its “country boy” anthem, and this one is no exception.   Though it probably won’t be the “All My Rowdy Friends” of this generation, “That’s How Country Boys Roll” is a fun song that you can tap your foot too. There are some great heavy AC/DC-ish chord riffs on this one that gives it a nice pep.

“I Shall Return” jets you off to a Cancun Mexico type feel, with some almost Jimmy Buffet type inspired lyrics, and the same type of fun…but again…with the Billy Currington touch so that it’s all his own.

The CD ends with the last cut “Heal Me”…an acoustic gem with a gospel feel that showcases how far Billy Currington’s voice has come.

Bottom line?  If you’re looking for one of those rare CD’s where every song is good then this is the CD you need to get this year.

You can hear some of the songs I’ve talked about right down below in the player.

Enjoy!

Billy Currington's "Doin' Something Right" Review!

Second albums are always scary all the way around. The artist isn’t sure if they’ll have the same effect on the audience.  Basically there’s something to prove.

The record company then is surely biting their nails and guarding their funds…

But the ones that really sweat bullets are the fans.  When you like a debut album you don’t want to commit too much, because there’s a good chance that the artist will be a flash in the pan, then you’re stuck with one good album.

But Billy Currington came out with something to prove on his sophomore album, and therefore created a great CD, which even though his latest and third album is much better, “Doin Something Right” is definitely worthy of a road trip, or a house cleaning CD.

This album went gold, selling 500,000 plus copies.  Pretty good!

For the most part, the best songs on the album are the slower ballads.  It’s seems that Billy hadn’t quite gotten into the pocket with the faster heavier songs…although the first song “I Wanna Be a Hillbilly” kicks the CD into high gear and gets you moving.

Of course “Driving Directions” is one of Currington’s best songs to date. It was a runaway hit for Billy and rightly so, being that it’s so catchy, has a great storyline to it, and you gotta love the twangy guitars.

The hit “Why, Why, Why” seemed to be one that many liked, but besides the great steel guitar and chugga chugga chord work, lyrically the song gets a bit corny.  That’s about the biggest complaint for the entire CD though.

In his ballads, “She’s Got a Way with Me” (co-written with Michael Montgomery)…and “That Changes Everything” — which is one of the best songs on the CD and should have been a hit…both touch have just the right amount of hook and catchiness.

Overall, there’s no reason why this “Do shouldn’t be in your collection.  Sure, like most CD’s you may be skipping a song here and there, but there’s also the songs that you’ll gladly listen to over and over again.
